Calling Friends | 友達とか電話とか

It is quite vague about classification of neighbourhoods in Toronto.

"Please tell me the definition of downtown."
A: "Downtown is the area that is south of Bloor, west of Parliament, and east of Spadina."
B: "Downtown is around the Eaton Centre."
C: "I am downtown, like Bay and Queen."
D: "Is Cabbagetown a part of the downtown?"
etc....

I want City of Toronto to re-define our neighbourhoods on the map before they put money into promoting Toronto's tourism.

It's been about a month since I moved to this new place. Like everyone in Toronto does, I tell people the majour intersection when I am asked where I live because the former municipality name sounds too large.

One of my friends used to live in the similar area where I live now. He move to downtown and he is a real urban dweller now.

When I ride my bike to go to downtown, I don't usually call up my friends other than main purposes. However, when I take TTC to go to downtown, I tend to try to stay longer in downtown. For that reason, I end up calling my friends to hang out with. Most of my friends are living in the downtown area, so I tend to try to see them if possible. Whatever excuses I list up when calling and talking on the phone, I can't hide the fact that I easily become lonely.

Today, I killed my time at the Eaton Centre by myself waiting for a message from my friend after the clinic visit and the gym. My friend didn't contact me, so I enede up calling him. He just forgot to message me that he wouldn't have time to have coffee with me. I felt disppointed and I started to walk towards north. I called another friend, but he was busy with his work. I called the other friend, but he sounded enjoying his day-offs. I was a little too pushy to one of my friends not to ruin my downtown visit by TTC, but I stopped attempting to break someone's good day-offs. I kept walking north to avoid rush hour. I got on the TTC at Bloor-Yonge and headed home.

トロントのエリアには名前がついているけれど、その定義がいまいち曖昧な場合が多い。どこまでがダウンタウンと呼べるのかとか、リバーデールってどっからどこまでなのかなど。トロントの観光局が Toronto Unlimited なるキャンペーンを始めたようだが、その前に地域の名前をはっきり決めてもらいたいと個人的に思う。

僕の住んでる地域は僕の知る限り地域名はなくあえて言うならば、トロント市と合併した旧イースト・ヨーク市よりイースト・ヨークと言っても良いのだけれど、イースト・ヨークと言って指す地域は結構でかかったりもする。仕方なく、トロントにいる人が一般的にするように近くの主な道路の交差点を言って僕の住んでるところを説明する。

僕が今住んでいる場所の近く（近くと言っても１５分くらい歩くと思われる）に友人が住んでいたが、その友人はダウンタウンにコンドを購入し便利そうな生活を送っている。

自転車でダウンタウンに行く時は、用事が済み次第家に帰るのも苦ではないのにTTCで行く時に限って、できるだけダウンタウンに長くいたいと思い出し、友達に電話をかけだす始末である。寂しがり屋な性格もその行動に輪をかける。

今日は友達とコーヒーの約束で、行けても行けなくても連絡があるということで５時過ぎまで１人イートンセンターで時間を潰し友達からの連絡を待った。結局かかって来なかったので、僕がかけると「連絡するのを忘れていた」そうである。がっかりした。イートンセンターを後に、ある友人にかけると仕事で忙しく、もう１人に電話すると休日を楽しんでいる模様。少し押してみたけれど、なんだか「迷惑だよね」と思い出し帰途についた。ラッシュアワーを避けるため北へ歩き、ブロア・ヤングから地下鉄に乗って帰った。朝からの雨のせいでなんだか不発なエクストラの休日だったけど、必要なことをちゃんとこなしたので良しとしよう。
