One year, my parents paid for a special daytrip for families – going to Wakayama (south of Osaka prefecture) by a special Blue Train passenger cars leaving from Tennoji Station (One of the biggest terminal station in Osaka).
The reason why my parents decided to join the daytrip is that my parents knew that I liked train, especially Blue Train (Blue Train was a nickname for overnight express trains that ran all over Japan led by electric or diesel locomotives). When my mom told me about the trip, I got so excited about it.
I am sure that I am not the only one, but I don't like feeling the end (getting closer home from far) when we take a trip.
Even though I was small, I had the feeling. I didn't like to see lights of the cities as getting closer to Tennoji. When we got off at Tennoji, my frustration was maximum and I was so angry becasue there was no more train trip other than taking commuter train home.
I remember confusing look on my parents' faces. I don't remember why I was so mad about the end of the trip – maybe I wanted a new Pla-Rail toy or two although stores were closed on Sunday night.

Are you a train Otaku?
When I was little I loved airplanes. When we moved to England in 1980 (long story), we flew via Laker Airlines. he was the dude who basically invented the low cost airline. before jet blue, before, southwest etc. He ended up bankrupt for a bunch of reasons, but 10 years later everyone was doing what he was doing. Anyway, we flew on a Laker SkyTrain (as he called them) they were DC10s. My folks knew that my brother and I were airplane otaku, so they asked if we could be brought up to see the pilot.
obviously in pre 9/11 (21 years before actually) the pilots flew with the friggin door to the cockpit open half the time. and we got to go in. we chatted with the pilots. There were 3 of course. it was fun. i remember the one guy had his feet up on the control panel, and even at 10 years old I thought that wasn't a great idea. The other guy was drinking tea or coffee and my dad joked about it not being any booze or else we were in trouble.
anyway,just a memory.
anyone want to see it?

I miss taking the blue "Jules Verne-ish" Nankai Railway's limited express train from Namba to Kansai Airport...

oh yeah... That blue train was called the "rapi:t"... perhaps a cross between rabbit and rapid (which means "fast" in french (rapide) , german (rapit)...)
