Suburbia Wonderland | 郊外の秘密

It was a weekday evening. I was on the Kennedy northbound bus from Kennedy station. The destination was ... the Pacific Mall.

I ordered a pair of prescription glasses at a store in the mall because one of my friends told me about a great deal when buying a pair of glasses. The Pacific Mall is located on the north east end of Toronto, um, it is actually located in Markham close enough to the municipal border of Toronto and Markham. There are bus lines and it is not impossible to reach there by the public transportation, but you have to be patient with Toronto's or GTA's gridlock problems (for those who don't what I am talking about, you will understand why Mayor Miller and competitors were talking about more effective public transportation in Toronto in every mayoral election just to take any buses in Scarborough). I could ask my friend for a ride for the first visit, but I didn't bother him to ask for a ride again for the second time because I know he has things to do.

Anyhow, I rode subway to Kennedy and got on a bus from there.

Oh... It took forever to see main streets passing　in the city – Lawrence, Ellesmere, Hwy 401, Sheppard – even though street lights looked pretty until Lawrence East or some main street.

When my butt starts to have pain by sitting on the hard TTC bus seat and feeling numbness with boring big houses scenery, I spotted an unusual store.

Is that ah.................... a maid café??? I doubted my eyes and what I saw. The bus is fast enough to push the café out of my sight.

"Was that a maid café?" I started to wonder.

Tonight, I can announce widely that that was indeed a maid cafe, located on Kennedy between Finch and Steeles (Please see the detailed info, yes, they have a website, too! lol.)

平日の夕方、といってもトロントはこの季節夕方でもすっごく暗くなる、僕はパシフィックモールに行くためにケネディ北方面行きバスに乗っていました。

パシフィックモールで眼鏡を注文してそれを取りに行ったのです。「なぜそんなめんどくさいところへ？」と思われる方もいるとは思いますが、トロントにお住まいの皆さん、眼鏡買うならパシフィックモールの眼鏡屋（結構な数の眼鏡屋ブースがあります）へ！ハキムやらレンズクラフターやらのへったくれに行く前にパシフィックモールへ行くことをお薦めします。まあ、僕も中国系カナダ人の彼のいる友達の受け売りですが（笑）

パシフィックモールはトロントの北東の端、実際にはマーカムにあって、トロントとマーカムの市境にあります。バスは結構頻繁に走っているので公共交通網を利用して行くことは全く不可能ではありません。ただ、トロントやらGTAやらが抱える交通渋滞の問題を垣間みることができるでしょう。短気な人にはトロント郊外でのバスでの移動はおすすめしません。ま、ぜひ１度（特にスカボロで）乗ってみてください。なぜトロント市長選の度に交通が焦点になってしまうかがすーぐわかります。１度目のパシフィックモールへは友達に頼んで車で連れて行ってもらいましたが、２度目はなんとなく気兼ねしてしまい、バスで行くことになったしだいです。

地下鉄でケネディまで行きそこからバスに乗り換えました。

大きな幹線道路を通過するのにどんなに時間のかかることでしょう。ローレンス、エルスメア、ハイウェー４０１、シェパード・・・、ケネディーの街灯は途中までかわいかったですが。

僕のお尻はいよいよバスの座席で痛くなりだし、とっても退屈な景色とともに僕の表情と感覚がなくなりだした頃、僕の目はあるお店に止まったのです。

「ええ（マンガの『え』に濁点をつける感じ）？　あれって、いわゆるメイドカフェちゃうん？」

僕は僕の目を疑いましたが、バスもそこまでとろとろ走ってるわけではないので、僕の視界からすぐに遠ざかりました。

「メイドカフェやん、なぁ。」

で、ここまでしょうもないことに長々と日英両方で書いている僕自信を尻目にして、発表します。トロントにも「メイドカフェ」できちゃってたみたいです（笑）

日本にお住まいの方は、メイドカフェが何たるかはご存知の方が多いと思いますが、僕はあんまり知らなかったもので Wikipedia で調べてみましたので良かったらどうぞ。
