One Year Trial Living without a Car in Calgary, Alberta

M found this:
"Carless in Calgary"
A guy who works at CBC Calgary is in process of trying a life without a car in Calgary, Alberta.

This sounds similar attempt to a documentary film at Toronto Hotdoc 2007, "To COSTCO and IKEA Without a Car" although I missed the showing in Toronto and I haven't watched this film yet.

The funny thing is that people who live in Calgary are doing these trials.

Being ahead of these two trials, I have lived in Calgary for about a year.
I am sure that there are quite a few people who live in Calgary without a car.

No surprises and no fears. Calgary needs to improve many of its public transportation system (except for C-train), but it's actually quite livable without a car.

I still remember that I was asked to show my driver's license at Safeway (Dominion type supermarket) in Shawnessy, Calgary.

"Can I show you Ontario Health Card instead? since I don't have a driver's license. I don't drive."
(Nothing strange at all in Toronto.)

A cashier said, "What?!" looked a little stunned.

On that day, I learned that being an adult and living in Calgary without a driver's license are a little extraordinary.

Yes, I had people who have cars around me.

For the year living in Calgary though, I used public transportation systems to commute, to shop, and to have fun – taking a bus or walk to the nearby station, walking on the icy trails, taking C-train with mostly teenagers.

By using Calgary Transit, only frustrations I had were about their bus routes and schedules.
I hoped they had more frequent services on the collector bus lines to the stations.

It's not difficult at all to live without a car.
Try it once and find a different way of living and spending time.

Meanwhile, I complain about TTC and I wish a good luck to a guy at CBC Calgary.
